About

Monte Albán is an ancient hilltop city built by the Zapotec people, rising above the valley near Oaxaca City in southern Mexico. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mesoamerica, and a visit here is as much about the setting as the stonework.

What you will see

The site is laid out across a wide, levelled summit, and the remains give a clear sense of how the city was organised:

  • Pyramids and platforms rising at different heights around the central areas
  • Plazas open to the sky, where the scale of the town becomes easy to picture
  • Ball courts, reminders of the ceremonial life of the place

Walking between these areas is unhurried, and it is worth allowing time to stop and look back at the buildings from different angles.

The views

Because the city sits on a hill, its surroundings are the other main draw. From the upper terraces you look out over the valley, which gives a sweeping sense of the land the Zapotec chose to build on. Many visitors find the view as memorable as the monuments themselves, especially in the softer light of morning or late afternoon.

Planning your visit

Monte Albán suits anyone interested in ancient cities, Mesoamerican history, or simply a day outdoors with a broad view. Wear comfortable shoes, as the site involves a fair amount of walking over stone and uneven ground. Oaxaca City lies a short distance away, so it is easy to combine the site with time in the city's streets, markets and restaurants before or after your trip up the hill.
