About
Montes de Oro is a mountainous canton in Puntarenas province, in western Costa Rica. Its name means "mountains of gold", and it sits well above the hot Pacific lowlands, where the air is noticeably cooler and often misty.
The landscape
Much of the canton is cloud forest, a habitat where moisture from low clouds keeps trees, mosses and ferns dense and green throughout the year. For many visitors, the change from the coast is the first thing they notice: a short drive inland brings a cool mountain climate that feels quite different from Costa Rica's beaches.
What a visit offers
- Hiking: the area is known for its trails through the forest, which suit walkers who enjoy quiet, undisturbed surroundings.
- Birdwatching: the cloud forest supports a rich range of birdlife, and the mountains are a rewarding place for anyone with binoculars and patience.
- Biodiversity: the canton is valued for the variety of plants and animals living across its altitudes.
Planning your trip
Montes de Oro works well as a day or overnight excursion for travellers already exploring Puntarenas or the Pacific coast, offering a contrast in climate and scenery. Bring warm layers, as temperatures at altitude are lower than on the coast, and sturdy footwear for forest paths that can be damp. Because the cloud forest changes with the weather, flexible plans and an early start often make the most of the day.
