About

The Basilica of San Pietro stands on Borgo XX Giugno in Perugia, the hilltop city in Umbria, at 74 Borgo XX Giugno. It is also known as the Basilica di San Pietro. Founded as a Benedictine abbey church in the 10th century, it has long been one of the most important religious buildings in the city.

What to see inside

Visitors come for two main things. The first is the wooden choir stalls, which are the church's most remarkable feature and give the interior a warm, carved character. The second is the Renaissance painting, including works by Perugino and other masters of the Umbrian school, whose altarpieces and panels show the regional style at its finest.

Planning your visit

  • Who it suits: lovers of art history, church architecture and woodwork, and anyone interested in the Umbrian Renaissance.
  • Getting there: it lies on the Borgo XX Giugno, the long street running through the historic centre, so it fits easily into a walk around the old town.
  • Contact: +39 075 34620.

Because the basilica sits within the historic centre of Perugia, a visit pairs naturally with the city's other museums, squares and medieval streets. Allow time to look closely at the choir stalls and paintings rather than passing through quickly.
