About

Ancient Samnite and Roman city known for Trajan's Arch and Strega liqueur.

Benevento is a city in Campania, in southern Italy, with a long past that reaches back to its Samnite and Roman origins. Walking its streets, visitors meet layers of that history, and the city is best known for two things: Trajan's Arch and the herbal liqueur Strega.

What to see

  • Trajan's Arch, the Roman monument that gives the city much of its character and is the first sight many visitors seek out.
  • The historic centre, where the Roman remains sit alongside the ordinary life of a working Italian city.

Why it suits a visit

Benevento makes a good stop for travellers interested in Roman history who want something less crowded than the largest sites. The visit can be short or unhurried, depending on how much time you want to give to the monuments and the streets around them.

The city is also a natural place to taste Strega, the liqueur for which it is famous. Many visitors take the chance to try it before continuing on through Campania.

Planning your trip

Benevento sits inland in Campania, so it works well as a day trip or an overnight stay within a wider journey through the region. Check ahead for opening times of individual sites, as these can vary.
