About
Blyde River Canyon lies within the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It is one of the largest canyons in the world and is also known as Motlatse Canyon. For many visitors, it is the centrepiece of a day spent in the region's dramatic landscape.
What to see
The canyon's most recognisable feature is the Three Rondavels, a rock formation whose rounded shapes are said to resemble traditional huts. From the canyon's edges, the views stretch across deep gorges and green slopes, and the scale of the landscape is the main reason people come.
The Panorama Route
The canyon is best experienced along the Panorama Route, which takes in several viewpoints. Plan to stop at more than one, as each looks out over the land from a different angle. The route suits a slow, unhurried drive, with time to step out of the car at each lookout.
Planning your visit
- Allow at least half a day to take in the main viewpoints along the route.
- The reserve is in Mpumalanga, so a car gives you the most flexibility between lookouts.
- For opening times, entry arrangements and current conditions, contact the reserve directly on +27 13 759 5300 before you set out.
Blyde River Canyon makes a good visit for anyone who enjoys wide natural scenery and an easy, scenic outing. It can be combined with other stops in Mpumalanga, and the surrounding area offers further landscapes to explore on the same trip.
