About

Dramatic 93-meter waterfall cascading down the mountainside directly into Aurlandsfjord, visible from the Flam Railway. One of the most photographed waterfalls along the scenic train route.

Brekkefossen is a waterfall in Flåmsdalen, in the village of Flåm, at the head of the Aurlandsfjord in western Norway. Its drop of 93 metres runs down the mountainside and ends directly in the fjord, which makes it one of the more striking sights in an area already known for its waterfalls.

What the visit is like

Most visitors see Brekkefossen from the Flåm Railway, the scenic line that climbs from the fjord up into the mountains. The waterfall is visible from the train as it passes, and it is among the most photographed falls along that route. For many travellers, this is the simplest way to see it: no walking is needed, and the view opens up as the train moves along the valley.

Around the falls

  • Flåm itself is a small village on the water, a short distance from the railway station, with the fjord at its doorstep.
  • The Flåmsdalen valley, where the falls lie, is a setting of steep slopes, rushing water and open mountain scenery.
  • The Aurlandsfjord, into which the waterfall falls, is one of the branches of the Sognefjord and is best appreciated from the water or the shore.

Because the falls are so easily reached from the railway, Brekkefossen suits a short stop on a longer trip to the fjords rather than a day of its own. Those who want to see it up close should check the local arrangements before setting out, as access depends on the route and season.
