About

Perfectly preserved medieval city and UNESCO World Heritage site. Stunning old town with palaces, towers, and filming location for Game of Thrones.

Cáceres is a city in Extremadura, in western Spain, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its old town is the reason most visitors come: a medieval quarter whose streets, palaces and towers have survived largely intact, so that walking through it feels like stepping back several centuries.

What to see in the old town

  • Palaces and mansions: the old town is lined with noble residences whose stone façades and carved details reflect the families who once lived there.
  • Towers: several defensive and lookout towers rise above the rooftops and give the quarter its distinctive silhouette.
  • Narrow streets and squares: much of the pleasure is simply wandering, following lanes that open unexpectedly onto quiet plazas.

The old town has also been used as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones, which some visitors come to see for themselves.

Planning a visit

The old town is compact and best explored on foot, with plenty of time to stop and look up at the architecture. Because the historic centre is the main attraction, a visit suits travellers interested in medieval heritage, architecture and slow sightseeing. Around the old town, the wider city offers further streets and places to eat and rest between visits.

Cáceres works well as a visit in its own right or as a stop within a wider journey through Extremadura. Check current opening arrangements for individual monuments before you go, as these may change.
