About

Historic cape at the southwestern tip of Africa, part of Table Mountain National Park. Famous for its dramatic cliffs and wildlife.

The Cape of Good Hope is a historic headland at the southwestern tip of Africa, a short drive from the centre of Cape Town in the Western Cape. It is also known by its Afrikaans name, Kaap de Goede Hoop, and it forms part of Table Mountain National Park.

The setting is the main draw. Dramatic cliffs drop to the sea, and the land is rugged and open, with fynbos vegetation spread across the slopes. Wildlife is a regular feature of a visit, and the park is known for its animals as well as its coastline.

What a visit is like

  • Scenic walks and viewpoints along the cliffs, where the meeting of ocean and land is the highlight.
  • Wildlife spotting in the national park, which many visitors count among the best parts of the day.
  • A full day trip, often combined with other stops on the Cape Peninsula.

Planning your trip

Cape Point is at the end of the peninsula, so allow time for the journey and for moving around the headland at an unhurried pace. Wind and weather can change quickly on this exposed coast, so bring layers and sun protection. To check current arrangements before you go, you can call the park on +27 21 780 9010.

Because the site sits within a wider national park and near Cape Town, it pairs well with a trip into the city, where you can explore the rest of the region at the same time.
