About
Cascada La Chorrera, also known as La Chorrera Falls, is a waterfall set in the tropical rainforest of Esmeraldas, in northwestern Ecuador. It lies along the Quinindé–Esmeraldas road, and the approach is the first part of the experience: you leave the road behind and follow a hiking trail through dense vegetation before the falls come into view.
What to expect
The waterfall drops into a natural pool, and the water there is the main reason people make the walk. Visitors often come to swim, cool off and sit by the water in a setting that still feels largely undeveloped. Because the site is reached on foot, it suits people who enjoy a short trek through forest more than a roadside stop.
- A hiking trail through tropical rainforest
- A natural pool at the base of the falls, suitable for swimming
- A quieter, more secluded setting than many roadside attractions
Planning your visit
Wear shoes with good grip, as the trail runs through vegetation that can be slippery, and bring water and anything you need for a day outdoors. Take care around the pool and follow the guidance of local people and any signs at the site. Because the falls are tucked away from the main road, it is a good idea to check the route and conditions before you set out.
La Chorrera makes a rewarding stop for travellers who want to combine time in nature with the wider landscape of Esmeraldas province, which lies on the Pacific coast and is known for its forests and rivers.
