About

14th-century castle built by the Scaliger family, now housing an art museum. Connected to the Scaliger Bridge over the Adige River.

Castelvecchio, also known as the Old Castle, is a fourteenth-century castle in Verona, in the Veneto region of Italy. It was built by the Scaliger family, the rulers of the city at the time, and today it houses an art museum. Its address is Corso Castelvecchio, 2, in the centre of the city.

What to expect

The castle is an attraction in two parts: the historic fortress itself and the collection displayed within its walls. Visitors come to walk through the rooms, see the works on show and take in the medieval brickwork that gives the building its character. It makes a good visit for anyone interested in the city's past, as the Scaligers shaped much of Verona's history.

Getting there and around

The castle is connected to the Scaliger Bridge, which crosses the Adige River. Walking across the bridge from the castle gives a view along the river and is an easy way to link the two sights in one stroll. From here, the rest of Verona's historic centre is within walking distance, so a visit to the castle fits naturally into a day of exploring the city on foot.
