About
The Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca stands on a rocky headland at the entrance to the bay of Santiago de Cuba, in Santiago de Cuba Province. It is also known as El Morro de Santiago, and locals often simply call it El Morro. The fortress is reached by the Carretera del Morro, about 7.5 kilometres from the city.
Built in the 17th century, the castle was designed to defend the harbour against pirate attacks, which were a constant threat to Spanish colonial towns in the Caribbean. Its thick stone walls, bastions and gun positions still show that purpose, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What a visit offers
- Views over the bay and the city of Santiago de Cuba, which are the main reward of the climb.
- A chance to read the fortress as a military building, from its ramparts to its defensive layout.
- A natural half-day outing, since the castle sits outside the city and can be combined with a return to town for lunch or an evening walk.
Planning the trip
The castle is a fair distance from the city centre, so it is worth arranging transport in advance. The site can be hot and exposed, so bring water and sun protection. For up-to-date visiting information, you can call the site on +53 22 691 569.
