About
The Cathedral of Our Lady, known locally as Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, stands on the Groenplaats in the centre of Antwerp, in the Flemish region of Belgium. It is a Gothic cathedral, and its tall outline is one of the first things visitors notice when they arrive in the old town.
What to see
- The spire. At 123 metres, it is the tallest church spire in Belgium, and it can be seen from much of the surrounding area.
- Four paintings by Peter Paul Rubens. The cathedral houses four works by the painter, which make it a natural stop for anyone interested in Flemish art.
Planning a visit
The cathedral is an easy walk from Antwerp's central squares and shopping streets, so it fits well into a day spent exploring the city on foot. Because it is a working church as well as a monument, it is worth being quiet and respectful inside. For up-to-date visiting arrangements, you can call the cathedral on +32 3 213 99 40 before you go.
Many visitors combine a stop here with a wander through the surrounding old town, where the Groenplaats and nearby streets offer cafés and a lively atmosphere, particularly in good weather. Antwerp's historic centre makes the cathedral an easy anchor for a relaxed half-day or longer.
