About

A pristine rainforest-fringed bay considered one of the world's most beautiful beaches, featuring ancient jungle meeting crystal-clear waters. Part of a protected nature reserve with luxury resorts.

Datai Bay is a beach on the northwest coast of Langkawi, in the Malaysian state of Kedah. It sits at the edge of an ancient rainforest, where the green of the jungle runs down almost to the sand and the water is clear enough to see across.

What the visit is like

Datai Bay is a place to slow down. The beach is quiet and framed by forested hills, and much of its appeal lies in that setting rather than in any single attraction. Visitors come to walk the sand, sit by the water and watch the light change over the bay, with the jungle close behind.

Because the bay is part of a protected nature reserve, the surroundings feel largely undisturbed. It suits travellers who want scenery and calm more than organised activity.

Around the bay

The bay is home to a group of luxury resorts, set within the reserve. Whether or not you stay there, their presence shapes how the area is visited, so it is worth checking in advance what is open to day visitors.

Datai Bay lies on Langkawi, an island with a wider range of beaches, villages and landscapes to explore. Many visitors combine a stop here with time elsewhere on the island.

Is it worth the trip?

If you enjoy natural scenery and quiet beaches backed by old forest, Datai Bay is a rewarding stop. Plan for a relaxed visit, and allow time to take in the setting rather than rushing from one sight to the next.
