About
The Black Abbey stands on Abbey Street in Kilkenny, in Ireland's Leinster region. It is a 13th-century Dominican priory church, also known as the Abbey of the Holy Trinity, and it takes its popular name from the black habits worn by the Dominican friars, the Black Friars, who founded it.
What to see
The church is known for its medieval stonework, which gives visitors a direct sense of the building's age. Inside, there are notable religious artefacts to look at as well. Because the site is one of only a few surviving Black Friar establishments in Ireland, it offers a rare chance to see this kind of monastic architecture still standing.
