About

Ascoli Piceno is a medieval city in the Marche region of central Italy, set among hills and rivers well away from the usual tourist routes. Visitors come for its historic streets, its distinctive local food and an atmosphere that feels authentically Italian.

The old centre

The heart of the city is Piazza del Popolo, widely regarded as one of Italy's most beautiful central squares. Its harmonious travertine buildings give it a unified, elegant look, and it is a good place to sit, watch daily life and orient yourself before wandering the surrounding lanes. Nearby, Renaissance palaces and older stone streets reward slow exploration on foot.

The city also holds ancient Roman bridges, a reminder of its long past, and artisan workshops where local craft is still practised. Together they make the centre feel lived-in rather than staged.

Food and festivals

Ascoli Piceno is known for olive all'ascolana, olives filled with meat and fried until golden. It is the local dish to try, and many visitors make it a reason for the trip in itself.

The city's most striking event is the Quintana, a spectacular medieval festival that brings the streets and squares to life with costume, pageantry and competition. If your travel dates allow, it offers a vivid way to see the town at its most festive.

Planning your visit

  • Allow at least a day to walk the historic centre at an unhurried pace.
  • Make time for a meal of olive all'ascolana.
  • Check the festival calendar before you travel if the Quintana is a priority.
  • Combine the visit with other towns in the Marche to see more of the region.
