About

Pequeño pueblo noruego famoso por su iglesia de madera de duelas del siglo XII extraordinariamente bien conservada, considerada uno de los mejores ejemplos de arquitectura medieval de Noruega.

Borgund is a small village in Sogn og Fjordane, on the western side of Norway. It is best known for its stave church, a wooden building that dates from the 12th century and is remarkably well preserved. Many visitors come for the church alone, though the village itself is quiet and easy to take in at an unhurried pace.

The stave church

Stave churches are built from timber set on upright posts, and Borgund's is considered one of Norway's finest examples of medieval architecture. Its dark, layered form stands out against the surrounding landscape, and the building rewards a close look at its carpentry and its age. Because it has survived so many centuries, it gives a rare, tangible sense of how medieval churches were built in this part of Europe.
