About

The Camargue is a broad wetland in southern France, where the Rhône River meets the Mediterranean. It is a landscape of salt marshes, lagoons and open grassland, and it feels quite unlike much of the rest of the country. For visitors who enjoy wildlife and wide skies, it makes a rewarding destination.

What you can see

The region is known for three animals in particular. Pink flamingos gather in the shallow lagoons and salt pans, often in striking numbers. White horses roam the marshes and grasslands with a freedom that is easy to notice as you travel through. Black bulls graze the same open land, giving the scenery its distinctive character.

Birdwatching and the reserve

Because the ecosystem is so varied, the Camargue suits birdwatchers well. The mix of freshwater, brackish and salt habitats supports a wide range of species, and the quiet expanses of marsh make it possible to watch them at a comfortable distance. Bring binoculars, patience and something warm to wear, since the wind across the open flats can be strong.

Cowboy culture

The area also has a long tradition of herding. Local guardians, known as gardians, work the livestock across the marshes, and their horsemanship and way of life remain a visible part of the region. Watching them move herds through this landscape gives a sense of how the land has been used for generations.

Plan your visit around the seasons and the weather, and allow time to move slowly through the reserve. The Camargue rewards unhurried exploration, whether you come for the birds, the animals or the open, pristine character of the wetlands.
