About

Una de las maravillas naturales más espectaculares de Colombia, este masivo cañón ofrece vistas impresionantes y actividades de aventura. Presenta formaciones rocosas rojas dramáticas y el río Chicamocha.

The Cañón del Chicamocha, also known as the Chicamocha Canyon, sits in the Santander Department of Colombia, along the road between San Gil and Bucaramanga. It is one of the country's best-known natural landscapes, and the drive to it, past Km 54 of the Vía San Gil-Bucaramanga, already hints at the scale of what lies ahead.

The landscape

The canyon is defined by its dramatic red rock formations and the Chicamocha River winding through the depths below. The views open out wide over the gorge, and many visitors come mainly to stand at the edge and take in the scene. Its sheer size and colour make it a natural draw for anyone who enjoys big landscapes.

What a visit offers

The park is a place for outdoor time and adventure. Visitors can expect:

  • Panoramic views across the canyon and the river
  • Walks and viewpoints among the red rock formations
  • Adventure activities set within the canyon's terrain

Because the canyon is largely an open-air experience, it suits a day trip, with time spent moving between lookouts and resting in the open air.

Around the canyon

The canyon lies within reach of San Gil, a town in the same department that is often visited as a base for outdoor activities. Combining the two makes for a full day or a longer stay in the region. If you want to confirm details before you go, the park can be reached by phone at +57 7 7233000.
