About

Uno de los castles normandos mejor conservados de Irlanda, construido en 1177. Domina Belfast Lough y alberga artefactos medievales y exposiciones.

Carrickfergus Castle stands on a rocky outcrop above Belfast Lough, in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is one of the best-preserved Norman castles in Ireland, and it was built in 1177. Its older names, Carraig Fhearghais, Carrick Castle and Norman Castle, still appear in local usage and on signs.

What to expect

The castle is a visit for anyone interested in medieval history and the long story of the Norman presence in Ireland. Its exhibitions and displays include medieval artifacts, which give context to the stonework you walk through. Because the building sits so close to the water, the views across Belfast Lough are a large part of the experience, and many visitors spend as much time looking out from the walls as they do inside them.

Around the castle

  • The castle is set in Carrickfergus itself, a small town on the lough shore, so a stop here can easily be combined with a walk along the waterfront.
  • Its position on the Marine Highway makes it straightforward to reach if you are travelling along the coast between Belfast and the north.
  • The town's own history, closely tied to the castle, gives a visit a natural second part.
