About
The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción, also known as the New Cathedral of Cuenca, stands on the corner of Mariscal Sucre and Benigno Malo in the historic centre of Cuenca, Ecuador's city in the Azuay province. It was completed in 1975, and its blue domes have become one of the best-known sights in the city.
What to expect
The cathedral is distinctive for its architecture, and its blue domes are easy to spot from many points in the old town. Because it sits in the centre, it is an easy stop to fit into a walk through the surrounding streets, where colonial-era buildings, churches and plazas invite slow exploration.
It is also counted among the largest cathedrals in Latin America, so visitors who appreciate scale will find it impressive from the outside and worth a look inside.
