About

Chichicastenango, often shortened to Chichi, is a town in the Quiché department of Guatemala, in the highlands of North America's Central American region. It is known above all for its indigenous market and for the Santo Tomás Church, where Maya ceremonies take place. Visitors come to see a living tradition as much as a place of interest.

The market

The market is held twice a week and fills the town's streets and squares with stalls. Local vendors sell textiles, woven goods, handcrafts and everyday produce, and the sense of commerce is lively and unhurried. Arriving early in the day gives the fullest impression of the crowds and colour, and it is worth allowing time to wander slowly rather than rushing from stall to stall.

Santo Tomás Church

The church stands beside the market and is the setting for Maya ceremonies. Here the religious life of the community is visible in a way that few places allow. Visitors should behave with respect: observe quietly, ask before taking photographs, and avoid interrupting anyone who is praying or taking part in a ritual.

Planning a visit

  • Go on a market day to experience the town at its busiest.
  • Look for traditional crafts, which are among the town's most characteristic goods.
  • Treat the church and its ceremonies as a place of worship, not only a sight.

Chichicastenango is one of Guatemala's most important centres for traditional Maya culture and crafts. For anyone interested in how that culture continues today, a visit on a market day offers a direct and memorable encounter with it.
