About

Kotor is a medieval town in Montenegro, on the southern Adriatic coast of Europe. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is one of the places in the country that most visitors plan their trip around.

The town itself

Kotor is built on a compact grid of narrow, winding streets paved with cobblestones. Much of the old centre stays within its Venetian fortifications, so walking through it means passing ancient stone buildings, small squares and doorways at every turn. Without a fixed route, it is easy to lose your way, and that is part of the pleasure. Wandering the lanes gives you a clear sense of how the town was laid out and how it has been kept.

The setting

The town sits at the edge of a bay that looks very much like a fjord, with towering mountains rising steeply behind it. The water, the stone walls and the peaks together create one of the most striking coastal scenes on the Mediterranean. Many visitors find the view from the water, or from high points above the town, as memorable as the streets below.

What a visit offers

  • Walking the old town's cobbled streets and stone-built quarters
  • Following the Venetian fortifications and seeing the town from its walls
  • Enjoying the bay and the mountains that frame it
  • Combining a day here with exploring the wider Bay of Kotor area

Kotor suits anyone who enjoys history, old architecture and dramatic scenery, and it works well as a stop on a longer journey along the coast. Allow time to wander slowly rather than rushing through.
