About

Lake Prespa sits high in the mountains where Greece meets Albania and North Macedonia, in the far north-west of the country. It is one of the older lakes in Europe, and its shores make a quiet change from the busier parts of Greece.

What to expect

The lake is known for its birdlife. More than 260 bird species have been recorded here, and visitors come in particular to see the Dalmatian pelican, a rare bird. Birdwatching suits both keen observers and those who simply enjoy watching the water in the early morning or late afternoon.

The shoreline is dotted with traditional fishing villages, where the pace of life is slow and the setting is largely unchanged. Walking between them and taking in the mountain views is a central part of a visit.

Who it suits

  • Walkers and hikers, with routes through the surrounding hills
  • Birdwatchers hoping to see rare species
  • Travellers looking for calm and a break from crowded resorts

Because the area is quiet and rural, it works best as a slower visit. Plan for time outdoors, bring suitable footwear, and allow for the fact that services may be more limited than in larger towns. The lake is a natural place to spend a day or more, with the reward being peace, open landscapes and wildlife rather than organised attractions.
