The Blue Mosque, also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Sultanahmet Camii, stands in the Sultan Ahmet district of Istanbul, Turkey, on the European side of the city. Its address is Atmeydanı Caddesi No:7, in the Fatih district.

What you will see

The mosque is known for its six minarets and for the blue tiles that give it its popular name. It was built between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I, and it is still an active place of worship as well as a major stop for visitors.

Planning a visit

Because the mosque is a working place of worship, it is worth keeping a few things in mind:

  • It is a place of prayer, so dress modestly and be quiet while inside.
  • Visitors are expected to remove their shoes before entering the prayer area.
  • Prayer times can affect when you are able to visit, so it helps to check locally before you go.
  • The mosque can be contacted by telephone at +90 212 458 4468.

The area around it

The mosque sits in the old heart of Istanbul, close to other well-known sites in the Sultan Ahmet area. Many visitors combine a trip here with a walk through the surrounding streets, making it a natural part of a day spent exploring the city's historic district.
