About

La pagoda más antigua de Bagan que data del siglo III, situada en las orillas del río Irrawaddy. Reconstruida después de los daños del terremoto de 1975.

The Bupaya Pagoda stands on the banks of the Irrawaddy River in Old Bagan, in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. It is a shrine, and it is known locally simply as Bupaya. Its position above the water makes it one of the more striking spots in the Bagan area, where the river and the surrounding plain are visible from its terrace.

What to expect

The pagoda is described as the oldest in Bagan, dating to the 3rd century. That age sets it apart from the many later temples and pagodas that fill the plain. The structure was damaged in the 1975 earthquake and has since been rebuilt, so what you see today is a restored monument rather than the original form.

  • Setting: a riverside position in Old Bagan, with views over the Irrawaddy.
  • Visit type: a shrine visit, suited to a quiet look at one of the area's earliest sacred sites.
  • Also known as: Bupaya.

Around the pagoda

Bupaya works well as part of a wider walk or drive through Old Bagan, where many other temples and pagodas are close by. Allow time to take in the river views as well as the monument itself.
