About

Originalmente construido como palacio de verano para reyes retirados, este palacio exhibe hermosos jardines y arquitectura tradicional de la corte coreana. Posteriormente fue utilizado como jardín botánico durante la ocupación japonesa.

Changgyeonggung Palace sits in the Jongno-gu district of Seoul, at 185 Changgyeonggung-ro, and is also known as Changgyeong Palace. It is one of the traditional royal palaces of the city, and visitors come to see its halls, gardens and courtyards set among the older parts of the capital.

What the palace is

The palace was originally built as a summer palace for retired kings, so its layout and setting reflect a more relaxed purpose than the main royal residences. Its buildings follow traditional Korean court architecture, with wooden halls, tiled roofs and courtyards arranged in the classic manner.

The gardens

The grounds are known for their gardens, which give the site a calmer character than many city attractions. Walking between the halls and the greenery makes it easy to see how the palace was used as a place of rest as well as ceremony.

A later chapter

During the Japanese occupation, the palace was used as a botanical garden. That period is part of its story, and it adds another layer to a visit beyond the architecture itself.
