About

Esta bulliciosa plaza central sirve como el corazón de Barcelona, conectando la ciudad vieja con el moderno distrito del Eixample. Está rodeada de tiendas, restaurantes, y cuenta con impresionantes fuentes y esculturas.

Catalonia Square, or Plaça de Catalunya, sits in the centre of Barcelona in the Catalonia region of Spain, and it is the point where much of the city meets. It links the old city to the north-east with the modern Eixample district that spreads out beyond it, so most visitors pass through it at some stage of a day in the city.

What to expect

The square is a busy, open space, usually full of people coming and going. Its surroundings are lined with shops and restaurants, which makes it a convenient place to stop for a meal, a coffee or some browsing before moving on. Fountains and sculptures stand among the paving, giving you something to look at while you wait for a friend or catch your breath between streets.

Making the most of a visit

  • Use it as a meeting point. Its central position makes it easy to reach and easy to navigate from.
  • Combine it with a walk. Stroll from the square into the older streets or along the wide avenues of Eixample to see how the city changes from one side to the other.
  • Stop for food and drink. The restaurants and cafés around the edges suit a relaxed pause in the middle of sightseeing.

Catalonia Square is less a single destination than a useful hub in a city built around movement. If you are planning your days in Barcelona, it is worth allowing time to pass through it, sit for a while and see how the city's old and new districts meet here.
