About

Le plus grand monument religieux au monde, ce complexe de temples hindous du XIIe siècle fut plus tard transformé en temple bouddhiste. Construit par le roi Suryavarman VII, il représente l'apogée de l'architecture khmère classique.

Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, set within the Angkor Archaeological Park in Krong Siem Reap. Also known as Angkor Vat or the Temple of Angkor, it is among the best-known monuments in Southeast Asia and is often described as the largest religious monument in the world.

What you will see

The complex dates from the 12th century and was built as a Hindu temple. Over time it was transformed into a Buddhist temple, and visitors today can trace both layers of its religious life in its galleries and sanctuaries. It was built by King Suryavarman VII and is regarded as one of the finest examples of classical Khmer architecture, with its carved stone walls, long corridors and towers rising above the surrounding water and forest.

Planning your visit

Because the temple sits within a large archaeological park, most visitors reach it by road from Siem Reap town, which offers hotels, restaurants and transport services. Allow a good part of a day to walk through the main complex, and consider arriving early or staying into the late afternoon, when the light on the stone is softer and the crowds thin.

  • Wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees, as is customary at active religious sites.
  • Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes for uneven stone floors.
  • Check the entry arrangements and opening times with the site before you travel, as these may change.

Beyond the temple

Angkor Wat is the centrepiece of a wider archaeological park that holds many other temples, so a visit can easily extend to other sites in the area. Siem Reap itself gives visitors a base for rest, meals and local life once the day's exploring is over.
