About

Complexe de temples romains antiques abritant certaines des plus grandes ruines romaines au monde, notamment le Temple de Jupiter et le Temple de Bacchus. Site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 1984.

Baalbek is a city in the Baalbek-Hermel Governorate of eastern Lebanon, and it is best known for its ancient Roman temple complex. The site is among the largest collections of Roman ruins in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. The city is also known as Heliopolis, the name the Romans gave it, and its spelling is sometimes given as Baalbeck.

What to see

  • The Temple of Jupiter, a monumental temple whose remaining columns and courtyard give a sense of the scale of the complex.
  • The Temple of Bacchus, one of the best-preserved temples on the site, with its surviving walls and decoration.

Walking between the two temples, you move through a large open area of stone, columns and fragments, which makes the visit feel more like an exploration than a single stop.

What the visit offers

A trip to Baalbek suits anyone interested in Roman architecture, ancient religion or archaeology. The ruins are extensive, so allow time to walk the grounds at an unhurried pace. Because the site is outdoors, a visit is best planned around the weather and comfortable footwear is useful on uneven stone.

The city itself lies in a fertile valley, and the surrounding area can be part of a day out. For current visiting arrangements, you can call the site on +961 8 370078 before you set off.
