About

The Cathedral Basilica of Salvador stands on the Terreiro de Jesus in the Centro Histórico of Salvador, Brazil. Also known as the Catedral Basílica de Salvador and the Catedral Primacial do Salvador, it is the seat of the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia, and its presence on the square gives the historic centre one of its most recognisable landmarks.

The cathedral was built between 1657 and 1672, a 17th-century church in the baroque style. It was raised on the site of the first Jesuit church in Brazil, so the building sits on ground that has been tied to the city's religious life for a long time.

What to expect inside

Visitors come for the baroque architecture and the ornate interior decoration, which make the church a rewarding stop for anyone interested in colonial Brazilian art. The building still serves as an active cathedral, so it is worth keeping in mind that it is a place of worship as well as a monument.
