About

Ville historique avec une magnifique cathédrale gothique et ancienne capitale de la Castille. Étape importante sur le chemin de pèlerinage du Camino de Santiago.

Burgos is a historic city in Castile and León, in northern Spain. It was once the capital of Castile, and that past still shapes its streets, squares and monuments. Many visitors know it by its older Latin name, Caput Castellae, meaning "head of Castile."

What draws visitors

The city's best-known sight is its magnificent Gothic cathedral, which dominates the old town and is the centrepiece of any visit. Set aside time to walk around it slowly, both outside and inside, as its scale and detail reward a patient look.

Burgos also lies on the Camino de Santiago, the long pilgrimage route that crosses northern Spain towards Santiago de Compostela. For walkers and cyclists, it is an important stop, and you will notice the pilgrim presence in its hostels, cafés and quieter corners.

Planning a visit

  • Old town: The historic centre is compact and best explored on foot, moving between the cathedral and the older streets around it.
  • Pilgrim route: If you are following part of the Camino, the city makes a natural place to pause, rest and restock.
  • Castile and León: The region around Burgos offers further historic towns and landscapes, so the city can anchor a wider trip through the area.

Burgos suits visitors interested in Gothic architecture, pilgrimage history and the layered past of Castile. Its cathedral alone justifies the journey for many, while the surrounding city gives the visit depth beyond a single monument.
