About

Capitale provinciale de la Vallée Sacrée connue pour ses bains thermaux et ses marchés traditionnels. Centre agricole entouré de terrasses incas et de montagnes enneigées.

Calca is the provincial capital of Calca Province, in Peru's Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is a working agricultural town, and that character shapes the visit: a place to see how life in the valley runs day to day, rather than a stop built around a single monument.

What the town offers

  • Thermal baths, which the town is known for and which make a restful break after time on foot or on the road.
  • Traditional markets, where local produce and everyday goods are sold, and where the rhythm of the valley is easiest to notice.
  • Inca terraces rising across the land around the town, a reminder of the agricultural systems that built the valley.
  • Snow-capped mountains visible from the surrounding area, giving the landscape its dramatic backdrop.

Who it suits

Calca suits visitors who want to slow down and see the Sacred Valley beyond its better-known sites. A morning in the market, an afternoon in the baths, and a walk among the terraces make a full and unhurried day. Because the town is a farming centre first, it is best approached with curiosity about daily life rather than an expectation of a polished tourist setting.

The town is also known as Villa de Calca, and sometimes as Qallqa. Those names may appear on maps and signs, so it helps to recognise them before you travel.
