About

Une citadelle du XVIe siècle construite par les Espagnols pour défendre la baie de San Juan. Ce site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO offre des vues panoramiques et une riche histoire militaire.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a 16th-century citadel built by the Spanish to defend the entrance to San Juan Bay. Locals and visitors often call it simply El Morro, and it is also known as Fuerte San Felipe del Morro. The site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it stands at 501 Norzagaray Street in San Juan.

What a visit offers

The fort is first of all a military monument, and walking its walls gives a clear sense of how it was designed to watch the sea and guard the harbour. Its position on the headland means that the views across the bay and the surrounding coastline are among the main reasons people come. Visitors who enjoy history will find plenty to explore in the rooms, passages and open terraces of the fort.

Plan your trip

  • Type of visit: a historic monument and heritage site, suited to walking and sightseeing.
  • Setting: on the edge of San Juan, close to the bay it was built to protect.
  • Contact: +1-787-729-6960.
  • Address: 501 Norzagaray Street, San Juan, PR 00901.

Because the fort sits on the water's edge, it pairs naturally with a wider walk through the old city and along the coast. Anyone interested in colonial-era defences, or simply in long views over the sea, will find it a worthwhile stop.
