About

Monument emblématique du XVIe siècle et mosquée construite par le sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, dotée de quatre minarets ornementés et servant de symbole d'Hyderabad.

Charminar stands on Charminar Road in the old city of Hyderabad, in the Indian state of Telangana. It is one of the best-known monuments in the city and is often called the Four Minarets, a name that describes its most striking feature. Each of its four tall, ornate minarets rises from the corners of a square structure, and the whole building has come to symbolise Hyderabad itself.

The monument dates from the 16th century and was built by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. It also functions as a mosque, so visitors should be prepared for a place of worship as well as a historic landmark. Dress modestly and keep a respectful manner while you look around.

What a visit offers

  • A close look at the carved arches and minarets that give the monument its character
  • A sense of the city's older quarters, which surround the monument and are busy with street life
  • A convenient starting point for exploring the lanes, markets and shops nearby

Planning your trip

Charminar works well as a stop within a half-day or longer walk through the old city, where you can pair it with the surrounding bazaars. If you want to confirm details before you go, the site can be reached by phone at +91-40-24561822. The monument is best approached on foot, since the streets around it are narrow and crowded.
