About
Castel Sant'Angelo stands on the Lungotevere Castello, on the Tiber's bank in Rome, Lazio. It is known in English as Hadrian's Mausoleum, its original name, and it is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks.
From tomb to fortress
The building began as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian. Over the centuries its role changed, and it was later used as a papal fortress. That layered history is part of what makes a visit here interesting: the same walls have served as a tomb, a stronghold and a residence, and you can trace each of those uses as you move through the rooms.
What to see
- Renaissance frescoes decorate some of the interior spaces.
- Papal apartments give a sense of how the popes lived here.
- Views over Rome from the upper levels, which many visitors find the highlight of the trip.
Planning your visit
Castel Sant'Angelo works well as a half-day outing, especially if you pair it with a walk along the river. Its location places it within easy reach of the historic centre, and the Tiber embankment makes a pleasant approach on foot.
