About

Chester is a city in northwest England, close to the Welsh border, and it is easy to spend a day here wandering its historic centre. Its most striking feature is the city wall, which runs all the way round the old town. The stretches of Roman wall that remain are a notable part of the visit, and walking along them gives you a clear view of the streets below.

Walking and looking

Much of Chester's character comes from its medieval layout. Among the best-known sights are The Rows, unusual covered galleries that run above street level, with shops on both the upper and lower floors. Many of the shops are set into black-and-white timber buildings from the 13th century, so browsing here feels like part of the city's long history rather than a separate attraction.

Chester Cathedral

The cathedral is built of red sandstone and is worth a visit in its own right. Its warm colour stands out against the timber-framed streets nearby. Guided or self-guided tours let you take in the building at your own pace.

What makes it a good visit

  • Walking the city walls for views over the historic centre
  • Exploring The Rows and the independent shops along them
  • Seeing the medieval timber architecture up close
  • Visiting Chester Cathedral and its red sandstone exterior

Chester suits a relaxed day or a short stay. Because the historic centre is compact, most of the main sights sit within easy walking distance of one another. Whether you come for the history, the architecture or simply an unhurried stroll, the city offers a pleasant mix of old and lively in one place.
