About

District le plus oriental du Suriname, bordé par la Guyane française et connu pour ses zones de forêt tropicale reculées et la rivière Marowijne.

Marowijne District is the easternmost district of Suriname, on South America's northern coast. It takes its name from the Marowijne River, which forms much of the boundary with French Guiana, so a visit here puts you right on a border between two very different landscapes.

What to expect

The district is known above all for its remote rainforest. Much of the land is far from the main population centres of Suriname, and that remoteness is the main draw. Travellers come for quiet, for green canopy and for the sense of being at the edge of the country rather than in its busy heart.

  • The Marowijne River: the river is the district's defining feature, shaping its borders and its daily life.
  • Border setting: the bordering French Guiana gives the area a distinct character, where the two sides of the river meet.
  • Rainforest landscape: the remote forest areas suit those who want to be surrounded by nature.

Planning a visit

Because the district is remote, it suits visitors who plan ahead and are comfortable with a slower pace. Check local conditions and transport before you set out, and allow more time than you would for travel closer to the capital, Paramaribo. Going well prepared will make the most of a trip into this quiet corner of the country.
