About

Une magnifique ville côtière croate connue comme la Perle de l'Adriatique avec des remparts médiévaux bien préservés et des lieux de tournage de Game of Thrones.

Dubrovnik is a coastal city in Croatia, in Dubrovnik-Neretva County on the Adriatic Sea. It is often called the Pearl of the Adriatic, and it was once known as Ragusa.

What the visit is like

The city is best known for its well-preserved medieval walls, which encircle the old town and give visitors a sense of how the place was built and defended. Walking the old town, with its stone streets and seafront views, is the main reason most people come. The walls and the water are a fitting pair, since the city sits directly on the coast.

Dubrovnik also appears on screen. Parts of the old town were used as filming locations for the television series Game of Thrones, and fans of the show often visit for that reason alone.

Planning your trip

  • Setting: a coastal city in southern Croatia, set on the Adriatic.
  • Main draw: the medieval walls and the old town within them.
  • Also of interest: the link to Game of Thrones filming locations.
  • Good for: a visit combining history, seaside scenery and walking.

Before you go, check opening times and any entry arrangements for the walls and other sites, as these are not covered here. Dubrovnik suits visitors who like a historic city with the sea close at hand.
