Finnmarksvidda

nature reserve

About

Le plus grand plateau montagneux d'Europe, couvrant 22 000 kilomètres carrés de nature sauvage arctique. Refuge de troupeaux de rennes sauvages et de l'élevage traditionnel de rennes Sámi.

Finnmarksvidda is a vast mountain plateau in Finnmark, the northernmost county of Norway. It is described as Europe's largest mountain plateau, covering about 22,000 square kilometres of Arctic wilderness. It is also known as the Finnmark Plateau.

What a visit is like

This is open, wide country rather than a single site with a fixed route. Visitors come to experience the scale of the landscape and the quiet of Arctic wilderness, where the horizon often seems to stretch on without interruption. It suits those who want to walk, observe wildlife and take their time, rather than those looking for a set programme of sights.

Wildlife and reindeer herding

  • The plateau is home to wild reindeer herds.
  • It is also a place of traditional Sámi reindeer herding, a living practice that shapes how the land is used.

Because herding is part of daily life here, visitors are asked to keep in mind that they are moving through working land and not only a nature reserve.

Planning your trip

Finnmarksvidda is a large area with few fixed facilities, so it helps to plan ahead, check local conditions and decide which part of the plateau you wish to explore. The surrounding county of Finnmark offers further Arctic landscapes and coastline to combine with a visit.
