About

Trois zones protégées qui mettent en valeur la biodiversité du Sri Lanka et les écosystèmes montagnards. Présente des espèces endémiques, des forêts de nuages et des paysages spectaculaires.

The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka are a group of three protected areas in the Central Province, around Nuwara Eliya. Together they protect the island's montane ecosystems and a rich range of its biodiversity, including many species found nowhere else in the country.

The three areas

  • Peak Wilderness Protected Area, a forested mountain landscape of cloud forest and steep terrain.
  • Horton Plains, a high, open plateau with grassland and dramatic cliff edges.
  • Knuckles Range, a rugged chain of hills with its own distinctive wildlife.

What a visit offers

The highlands suit visitors who enjoy nature, slow walks and wide views. The cloud forests are damp and green, often wrapped in mist, and the landscapes change quickly with the weather. Endemic species, plants and animals that occur only in this part of the island, are the main reason the areas are protected, so a visit is as much about observing unusual wildlife as about scenery.

Because the areas are wild and high, it helps to plan ahead. Conditions can be cool and wet, and paths can be uneven. Carrying warm layers and waterproof clothing is sensible, and checking access arrangements before you set out is wise.

Around the highlands

Nuwara Eliya, the nearest town, is a practical base. It sits in the same province and offers places to stay and eat, which makes it a convenient starting point for exploring the protected areas. For up-to-date information on visiting, the park contact number is +94 57 2050149.
