About

Bâtiment civique de style néo-baroque achevé en 1906, servant de siège au Belfast City Council. Remarquable pour son dôme en cuivre et ses jardins commémoratifs.

Belfast City Hall stands at the heart of Northern Ireland's capital, on Donegall Square in the city centre. It is a Baroque Revival civic building, completed in 1906, and it still serves as the seat of Belfast City Council, so it is a working government building as well as a landmark. It is also known in Irish as Halla na Cathrach Bhéal Feirste.

What to look for

  • The copper dome, which crowns the building and is one of its most recognisable features from the streets around it.
  • The memorial gardens, set within the grounds and a quiet place to pause in the middle of the city.
  • The architecture itself, with its ornate Baroque Revival detailing, which reflects the civic confidence of the early twentieth century.

Planning your visit

The building is in Donegall Square, Belfast BT1 5GS, within walking distance of the city's shops, restaurants and other sights. Because it is an active council building, it is worth checking in advance with the council before you go, using the telephone number +44 28 9032 0202, so you know what access is available on the day you plan to visit.

Many visitors combine a stop here with a wander through the surrounding streets, making it an easy starting point for exploring the city centre on foot.
