About

Leixlip is a town in County Kildare, Ireland, set where the River Liffey meets the River Rye. It is a commuter town at heart, but its setting along the water gives it a quieter, greener character than many places on the edge of a capital.

The name is said to come from the Old Norse for "salmon leap", a reference to the river and the fish that once made their way up its waters. Rivers remain central to the place, and the surrounding Liffey Valley is one of the reasons people come here.

What to see

  • Leixlip Castle, which dates from 1172 and stands out across the landscape. It is the town's most notable historic landmark.
  • The River Liffey and River Rye, where the two waters meet, a pleasant spot for a walk along the banks.
  • The Liffey Valley, a scenic area of countryside around the town, suited to unhurried walks and time outdoors.

Planning a visit

Leixlip works well as a base. Visitors who want a day among riverside paths and historic architecture can stay here and explore the valley at their own pace. It suits anyone who would rather spend time in a small town by the water than in a busy city centre, while still being within reach of Dublin.

If you are visiting, check the current opening arrangements for the castle and any local facilities before you travel, as these are not covered here. Then allow time simply to walk the river and see the valley for yourself.
