About

Un collège théologique islamique du XIVe siècle réputé pour ses motifs géométriques complexes et ses décorations en stuc sculpté. Il est considéré comme l'un des plus beaux exemples de l'architecture Marinide.

The Bou Inania Madrasa stands in Fès el-Bali, the old walled medina of Fes in Morocco, on the Talaa Kebira. It is also known as the Medersa Bou Inania. Built in the 14th century as an Islamic theological college, it is counted among the finest examples of Marinid architecture.

What to look for

  • Geometric patterns that cover the walls, arranged in intricate designs that reward a slow look.
  • Carved stucco decorations in the rooms and courtyard, showing fine detail at close range.
  • A place of study, since the building was made as a college, so its layout reflects that purpose.

The visit

The madrasa suits visitors who enjoy architecture and decoration, and who want to see a building that is closely tied to the old city around it. Its setting in the medina means the walk there is part of the experience, with narrow streets, markets and the everyday life of Fes close by. Allow time to move through the building at an unhurried pace, so the patterns and carvings can be seen properly.
