About

Un complexe palatial romain remarquablement bien conservé qui forme le cœur de la vieille ville de Split. Construit au IVe siècle, il abrite aujourd'hui des boutiques, des restaurants et des habitations dans ses murs antiques.

Diocletian's Palace is a Roman palace complex in Croatia, in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County area. Its description places it at the heart of Split's Old Town, and the stone walls of the complex still frame much of the city's old quarter.

The palace was built in the 4th century and is remarkably well preserved. Rather than standing as a silent ruin, it has been woven into everyday life: its ancient walls now enclose shops, restaurants and homes. A visit is less like walking through a museum and more like moving through a living neighbourhood that happens to sit inside Roman architecture.

What a visit offers

  • Walking the old walls and passageways, where ancient stonework meets modern street life.
  • Stopping for a meal or a drink in restaurants set among centuries-old masonry.
  • Browsing shops and watching residents go about their day within the complex.
  • Exploring the Old Town that surrounds the palace, with its narrow streets and squares.

Planning your time

The palace suits a relaxed visit. Because it is a working part of the city, you can combine it with an unhurried walk through the Old Town and let the day follow your interest. If you enjoy seeing how historic buildings are used today, it is well worth the time, and it pairs naturally with the rest of Split's compact centre.
