About

Botev Peak is a mountain in Bulgaria, rising to 2,376 metres. It is the highest point of the Balkan Mountains, and it lies within the Central Balkan National Park. The summit is named after Hristo Botev, the revolutionary poet.

What the visit is like

This is a summit for hikers rather than a casual stroll. The route crosses steep, rocky ground, so the climb asks for sturdy footwear, a reasonable level of fitness and a careful eye on the terrain. Those who make it to the top are rewarded with wide views across two lowland areas: the Danube Plain to the north and the Thracian Lowlands to the south.

Around the peak

  • The summit is part of the Central Balkan National Park, so the visit also brings you into a protected mountain landscape.
  • The views from the top are the main draw, with both plains spread out below on a clear day.
  • Because the climb is demanding, it suits walkers who enjoy a full day in the mountains and want a clear goal at the end.

If you are planning a trip, check the weather and conditions before setting out, since the higher ground can be exposed, and allow enough time to descend before evening.
