About

Ituri Province lies in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and much of its land is covered by parts of the Ituri Rainforest, a wide expanse of forest that is among the most biodiverse ecosystems in Africa. For visitors interested in wildlife and living cultures, it is a destination that rewards patience and an open mind.

The forest and its wildlife

The Ituri Rainforest is the setting for the province's most distinctive attractions. Primate watching is a particular draw, with opportunities to see several monkey species moving through the canopy. Forest elephants are also found here, making the province a place where the wider forest ecosystem is the main subject of a visit rather than a backdrop to it.

Encounters with the Mbuti

The province is home to the Mbuti, an indigenous pygmy people whose lives have long been bound up with the forest. Visits that include time with Mbuti communities offer a chance to learn about their way of life and their relationship with the land around them. Such encounters work best when approached with curiosity, respect and an awareness that these are living communities, not attractions staged for guests.

What a visit is like

  • Dense forest and traditional villages make up much of the landscape, so the pace of travel is set by the terrain.
  • Wildlife viewing and cultural exchange are the two main reasons people come, and they often shape the same trip.
  • The experience is immersive: the forest, its sounds and its communities are close at hand throughout.

Ituri suits travellers who want to step well away from conventional tourist routes and spend time in one of Africa's great forest regions. Planning ahead, and approaching local communities with care, will make the visit more rewarding for everyone involved.
