About

Hamina is a coastal town in southeastern Finland, and its layout is what sets it apart. The centre is built around a historic star-shaped fortress dating from the 18th century, and the streets radiate outward in an octagonal pattern. Once you have the logic of it, the town is surprisingly easy to find your way around.

What to see

  • The fortress. The star-shaped fortress is the reason the town looks as it does. Its military architecture is well preserved and makes a clear case for a slow walk around its edges.
  • The radial streets. Walking the octagonal centre is a pleasure in itself. The streets converge and fan out from the middle, so each turn tends to reveal a new view of the town.
  • The Hamina Tattoo. The town hosts an annual military music festival, the Hamina Tattoo. If your visit can be timed to coincide with it, the festival gives the fortress setting a lively purpose.

Planning a visit

Hamina suits a relaxed day or two rather than a long list of sights. Much of the appeal lies in the setting: the fortress, the open streets and the sea nearby. Check the festival dates in advance if you want to see the Tattoo, as they fall at a fixed time each year and will shape the rest of your plans.

Because the town is compact, you can easily combine time on foot in the centre with a slower pace elsewhere. It is a good stop for anyone interested in military history or in planned towns with an unusual shape.
