Frutillar is a lakeside town on the shores of Lake Llanquihue in southern Chile, set in South America's Lake District. It is a place where the water, the volcanic skyline and a German colonial heritage meet, and it makes a calm stop for any visitor drawn to the region.

The town and its setting

Frutillar is known for its German colonial architecture, a legacy of the settlers who shaped this part of the country. Its streets and houses reflect that history, and the town sits so that many of its views are framed by the lake. On clear days, the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes rise across the water, which gives the waterfront a dramatic backdrop.

Music and the lakefront theatre

Frutillar is often called Chile's classical music capital. Each summer it hosts the Semanas Musicales festival, which brings performers to the town's lakefront Teatro del Lago. Visitors who plan their trip around the festival will find the town busiest and most lively at that time, while the theatre itself is worth seeing whenever you are there.

Gardens and the surrounding area

The town is also known for its carefully kept gardens, which make pleasant places for a slow walk between the lake and the older streets. Frutillar works well as a base or a day's outing from the wider Lake District, with the lake, the volcanoes and the town's own character offering a varied and relaxed visit.
