About
Benagil Cave is a sea cave on the Algarve coast of southern Portugal, and one of the region's best-known natural sights. Its defining feature is a large opening in the roof, a natural skylight that lets daylight fall onto the golden limestone walls and onto the beach below.
What to expect
The cave is reached from the water. Visitors arrive by kayak, by boat, or by swimming in, so the approach is part of the experience. Once inside, the dome-shaped ceiling opening gives the space a cathedral-like feel, and the light changing across the rock is much of what draws people in. The view is among the most photographed in Portugal, so you will likely share the beach with other visitors.
Planning a visit
- Getting there: Access is by sea only, so choose kayak, boat, or swimming according to your comfort and fitness in the water.
- Light: The skylight is the highlight, so consider when the sun is high enough to light the interior.
- Company: Expect to see many other people, especially at popular times.
The surrounding coast
Benagil lies on the Algarve, a coastline known for its cliffs, sea caves and sandy coves. Visiting the cave fits naturally into a day spent exploring this stretch of shoreline, whether you are interested in the sea, the rock formations, or simply a quiet afternoon by the water.
