About
Théâtre du Chai du Terral is a performing arts venue in Saint-Jean-de-Védas, on the western edge of Montpellier. As its name suggests, it occupies a converted wine cellar, or chai, and it hosts theatre, music and dance performances.
What to expect
The programme is varied. Alongside dance, theatre and concerts, the venue also stages circus and shows for young audiences, so a visit can suit a night out as well as a family outing. The main performance hall seats 370 people. There is also a bistro hall and an exhibition gallery, so the building offers more than the stage alone.
The setting
The venue sits within the historic Château du Terral estate, and the grounds are part of the wider Parc du Terral, which adjoins it. The estate also houses nine rooms used by the municipal music and visual arts schools, so the site has a working, everyday life beyond its evening performances. Arriving a little early gives time to walk around the park before the show.
Planning a visit
Saint-Jean-de-Védas is a short distance from the centre of Montpellier, which makes the venue an easy choice for anyone already staying in the city. Because programmes change, check the venue's own website for what is on and when before you go.
